Canoe Trail Friends Australia Day nomination
We are pleased that the Canoe Trail Friends have been nominated for a Premiers Australia Day Active Citizenship Awards - category Community Group. The nominees and winner will be acknowledged by Mandurah Mayor Marina Vergone at the Sunday 26 Australia Day Celebrations on the Eastern Foreshore Mandurah.

1. The Friends have written
to Shire of Murray recommending that a non powered launch site be included in
the feasibility study for a boat ramp at Wellya Crescent South
Yunderup
2. Consultation is
almost finalised between ourselves, City of Mandurah and the Disability Access
Advisory Group in compiling a flyer inviting anyone with limited mobility or
who uses a wheelchair to respond re: the provision of a canoe /kayak launch
site within City of Mandurah waterways
3. The “Ideas
Meeting “ for Friends of Samphire Cove will be held as soon as possible,
unfortunately Nicole from DEC is part of the team ridding rats from Penguin
Island
4. We along with
other similar groups have expressed interest in having a stall at the City of
Mandurah’s, Stretch Festival to be held on Saturday 4 May 2013

Lake Clifton's Thrombolites
Lake Clifton thrombolites
The stromatolites of Shark Bay, on Western Australia's north western coast, are well publicised in the tourist literature. However you don't need to go to such a remote place to see these pre-historic living rocks. Their close cousins - thrombolites - can be seen just south of Mandurah, within 100km of Perth.
In case you were wondering what these things are, both are types of rare and extremely primitive life forms. They consist of single-celled bacteria which deposit layers of silt and calcium that slowly grow into rounded rocks. Scientists believe they are the earliest form of life on earth, dating back about 3500 million years, and the origins of oxygen in the atmosphere. These relics are mostly extinct and exist only as fossils - living examples can still be found growing in just a handful of places in the world. Shark Bay is the well known Western Australian example, but Lake Clifton is more accessible.
Lake Clifton's thrombolites can be reached from either of two roads - Mount John Rd and Clifton Downs Rd. Both are turn-offs from the Old Coast Road, south of Mandurah (and south of the Dawesville Channel) but north of where the new John Forrest Highway branches off towards Perth.
A few minutes drive brings you to a parking area with toilets and signs telling you about the thrombolites and their environment, which is part of Yalgorup National Park. From there a boardwalk takes you out over the shallow lake to where the thrombolites can be viewed from many angles. And what do you see? A community of rounded rock-like structures lying just beneath the surface ... or just breaching the surface, depending on water levels. Their humble appearance gives no indication of their status as extremely rare and ancient life forms - living fossils.
The thrombolites are more exposed in the lower water levels of summer and autumn, but are still easily seen at other times. Visibility is more affected by wind - strong winds may roughen the water surface and limit the underwater view. On the other hand, wind helps keep away the mosquitoes which can be a nuisance in still weather.

Birdwatching Trail Guide: Our thanks and congratulations go to both Robert for compiling our latest guide and to Maxine for assisting .
Peel Inlet & Harvey Estuary – Water & Shorebirds – Birdwatching Trail Guide
Last February we hosted a forum “Why & How” we should protect our local water and shorebirds, this guide has successfully responded to two ideas from that forum

2011 Peel Region Canoe Week Summary: 23 event activities, 565 participants (271 newcomers- 294 club/group members)
Sticks Channel: At a recent meeting of the Peel Boating Community Group the Department of Transport undertook to hold a public forum on the Peel Aquatic Review this will include Sticks Channel
Certificate of Appreciation: On 16th November at a function held at the Port Bouvard Yacht Club the Canoe Trail Friends received a Certificate of Appreciation from the Peel Harvey Catchment Council for our involvement in the preparation of the “Peel- Yalgorup System Ramsar Management Plan”
Birds at Boodalan: Over the last six or so years most of us have watched the disappearance of Boodalan Island Nature Reserve, where Pelicans bred and She Oaks grew, to it’s present state as a sand bar. So you can imagine our surprise when on a club paddle about a week ago, Robert counted 2,000, yes two thousand Red Necked Stints there. These little migratory birds never cease to amaze, how about looking them up and check out the distance they travel to reach here
Shorebird Workshops: Want to become a qualified bird counter then this is for you. Two four day Shorebird Workshops in the Peel will be held on 12-15 December 2011 and 16-19 January 2012.

We are investigating the possibility of applying together with the Shire of Murray for funding to install two picnic shelters
Estuary & Wetlands Walk: On Sunday October 30 as part of “Walk Over October” thirty walkers took advantage of the fine day and were very appreciative of Robert’s environmental knowledge
Sticks Channel: No further news from the authorities however we are still receiving enquiries from concerned individuals

During Canoe Week: Attendances were very good, final figures will be available when report is completed
The “Twilighter” went very smoothly, with a cross section of forty five people (mainly paddlers) who enjoyed the evening
Port Bouvard Limited’s representative Tom Barry was thanked, for arranging their generous donation of $2400 for newspaper adverts
Robyn Lister from the South Metropolitan Public Health Unit was also thanked for her involvement with canoe week over the last six years
Mandurah Paddling Club has received an excellent letter of thanks from Comet Bay College, for the way the club managed the come ‘n’ try event, for students of the College with Autism
Interest shown in the publicity was probably the best ever, 15 paddlers took part in the Friends, Fish “n” Chip paddle, the weather was good overall, with only one event cancelled
Sticks Channel issue The Department of Transport has stated that it will not be able to complete the Peel Aquatic Review for at least another 12 months. Therefore the Sticks Channel speed limits will remain unchanged for the summer boating season 2011-12.
Please do not think that this means there will be no future speed limit increase. The Department also states that it is still formulating a consultation plan.
These responses result from enquiries whether the review could be finalised by May 2012, and if a public forum was part of the consultation process.

Canoe launch site signs are now in place at Pinjarra, Ravenswood, Furnissdale, Riverside Gardens and Western Foreshore
Novara Steps & "Canoe Slide” A set of steps with a "canoe slide”, has been installed at Novara. Located south of the boat ramp it will be particularly useful during peak holiday periods.
Batavia Quays South Yunderup: The Friends are pleased that the boat ramp upgrade, includes the non-powered site and car parking for paddlers.
Furnissdale: As part of the Review of Furnissdale Structure Plan, The Friends have indicated their requirements for non-powered sites ,
Murray Bend: Following a request from The Friends, the Shire of Murray has placed sand between the boat ramp and private jetty
Point Grey Outline Development Plan: The ODP, allows for the two non-powered sites launch sites, as identified by the Canoe Trail Friends. Port Bouvard Limited was very helpful during the consultation process.
Ravenswood: A public launch site has been established opposite the Ravenswood Hotel, appreciation goes to the Shire of Murray and Mandurah- Murray Vietnam Veterans Canoeing Group
Riverside Gardens: Is a good model of a canoe launch site. Thanks go to the City of Mandurah for being prepared to consult, even about car parking requirements
Woodlands Pde. Stakehill: The Shire of Murray has placed sand on the degraded beach. Access is now via the Kwinana Freeway at the Lymons Road turn off

PROTECTION OF WATER and SHORE BIRDS
As advocates for the protection of Water and Shore Birds, The Canoe Trail Friends have consulted with and received support from a wide range of community groups and individuals for this low cost initiative
Protection primarily would give the birds respite from the effect of human interference; for example, power boating, canoeing, jet skiing and sail boarding.
After an extensive consultation process, DEC is recommending that to protect water and shorebirds, a four knot limit apply to the Austin Bay Nature Reserve, that boating be prohibited at Samphire Cove, Creery Wetlands and the inlet at Len Howard Conservation Park

2011 PEEL REGION CANOE WEEK “ Canoeing Capital of Western Australia”
The 6 th Annual Peel Region Canoe Week was held from 27 August – 11 September 2011 Where: Dwellingup, Mandurah, Pinjarra and Shoalwater
Dragon Boating, Canoe Polo, Whitewater Events, Sea Kayaking, Outrigger Canoeing, Senior Paddles, River and Estuary Paddles, Raft Building, Open Craft Canoeing, a Multi Sport Event, plus a Photographic Competition

PROTECTION OF WATER and SHORE BIRDS
As advocates for the protection of Water and Shore Birds, The Canoe Trail Friends have consulted with and received support from a wide range of community groups and individuals for this low cost initiative
Protection primarily would give the birds respite from the effect of human interference; for example, power boating, canoeing, jet skiing and sail boarding.
After an extensive consultation process, DEC is recommending that to protect water and shorebirds, a four knot limit apply to the Austin Bay Nature Reserve, that boating be prohibited at Samphire Cove, Creery Wetlands and the inlet at Len Howard Conservation Park
